If you are planning to set up some wireless speakers outdoors or in a large house then you need to be concerned about the operating range. Different wireless models use different types of transmitters that vary greatly in terms of maximum range. In this review I will look at a few technologies that are being used in wireless speakers and discuss how far today’s models realistically can transmit.
Wireless speakers use a transmitter base to receive their signal. These transmitters work at different frequencies. In addition, different transmitter models output different levels of power. In general, models that use the 900 MHz frequency band usually do not exceed 1 mW power in the US. This may seem tiny compared to cell phones which output up to 1 Watt of power. However, 900 MHz transmitters use a vary narrow signal. As such the receiver unit inisde the speakers is very sensitive. That means that 900 MHz models still achieve at least 100 feet range. Some models even achieve more than 300 feet line-of-sight range.
If you are looking for wireless amplifier, oscillations then range is paramount. As such you may want to investigate some digital 2.4 GHz models. These transmitters send a stronger signal and can transmit up to 500 feet.
